This year’s read-a-thon runs from March 25 to April 8. Our goal is for each student to spend a minimum of 15 minutes per day reading to help foster a lifelong love of reading.
Last year, the read-a-thon raised an incredible $18,000! With those funds, the school was able to provide ukulele lessons for all grade 4 students this year. We also used those funds to provide a $230 Amazon gift card to every teacher in January, which helped them to purchase the appropriate toys, books and other resources and supplies they need for their classrooms.
This year, we hope to raise $10,000 to support important literacy and arts initiatives at our school. Earlier this year, we reached out to the school’s teacher librarian, Ms Tirkos, about the library’s needs and she identified the purchase of a set of encyclopedias and subscriptions for 15 English and French magazines as something that would benefit the students and enhance the library. The funds raised from this year’s read-a-thon will help us to support her ask as well as other arts and literacy initiatives like ukulele lessons for next year. We are also committed to ongoing conversations with Ms Tirkos about how we can support efforts to diversify the library collection at Earl Beatty.
As of March 27, we have raised $580 towards our goal of $10,000.
To help us reach our fundraising goal, we are asking parents/guardians to support their young reader(s) in collecting pledges from family and friends. Donations can be made by cash, cheque or online. Online donations can be made using this link: bit.ly/EBreadathon. Only donations made online will be eligible for a tax receipt. More information about pledges can be found on the pledge form.
To encourage your young reader(s), the following prizes are available:
- A movie party for the class that reads the most on each floor
- A chance to win one of three book fair shopping sprees for students who meet the goal of 15 minutes per day
- A day of double-length recess if the whole school meets the goal of an average of 15 minutes per student per day
If you have questions about the read-a-thon, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for your support!
